1) Launch the Spotify app and tap on the Home tab. 2) Open the Music Quality cell. 3) Set the stream quality to Automatic. 4) Optionally, set the download quality to Very High. 5) Disable the Download Using Cellular option. The answer is “it depends”. First off - anything that connects to the internet uses data. If you’re on wifi, it will use the wifi, if you’re not connected to wifi, it will use “mobile data” (broadband). Add another device that supports Spotify or has the app (like a speaker or laptop). Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, and log in to Spotify. Listen out loud. Just use a tiny Spotify Music Converter and convert Spotify music to plain audio formats and transfer music from Spotify to MP3 player, then you can enjoy Spotify Music on your MP3 player without taking out a heavy mobile phone. If you think this post is helpful for your friends, just share it with your friends.
You can quickly mark a few Spotify playlists and make them available offline directly from your phone — your computer doesn’t need to be on because you download tracks directly from Spotify’s own server.
Connect to a Wi-Fi network to do this procedure when possible, rather than 3G, because Wi-Fi is probably a lot faster and, depending on your data plan, should cost less, too.
There’s an option in your settings that allows you to turn syncing over 2.5G/3G networks on or off to avoid unnecessary data costs. On the iPhone, go to Settings and ensure the Sync over 2G/3G switch is in the Off position (it appears gray, not green, when it’s set to Off). On Android, go to More→Settings and make sure Sync over 3G is unchecked.
iPhone and Android devices are the most popular. For those of you using another device, the information in the following sections should still help you find your way, and you can also check the Spotify Mobile page for help.

You can also sync playlists while you’re actually in one. On the iPhone, swipe your finger across the silver Available Offline switch at the top-right of the screen to turn Offline mode on (or off). When on, the switch is green and says Yes. When off, it’s gray and says No.

Sunscreen; check. Hat; check. Playlists; ready for anything—even a vacation destination without Wi-Fi.
Being completely disconnected from Wi-Fi and data—whether in an airplane or rustic cabin in the woods—doesn’t mean you need to be without your favorite music or podcasts. If you’re a Premium subscriber, it only takes a few simple steps while you’re still at home and on Wi-Fi to download your favorite content and ensure it’s available when you go off the grid or up in the air.
First, if you’d like to use Wi-Fi to download, go to Settings > Music Quality > Download Using Cellular and check that the feature is set to the default “off.” From there, it’s easy to download tracks and podcasts on your cell phone, tablet, or iPad:
- Search for the content you want
- Select the playlist, album, or podcast you want to listen to offline
- Switch the download toggle ON—it will turn green so you know it’s working
- Once tracks in your library are downloaded, you’ll see a little green arrow below each song name
- Connect your headphones and start listening, no matter where you are!

Note that if you’re seeing songs grayed out when you’re offline, it means they’re not downloaded and you won’t be able to play them without Wi-Fi. (It might be a good idea to experiment with going online before you board the plane.) To see everything you’ve downloaded on your phone, check out the “Downloads” tab under “Your Library” on mobile.

Also know that there’s a maximum to the number of songs and podcasts you can download per device. If you do hit the limit, you can always go back and remove some existing downloads.
Plus, keep in mind that in order for Premium subscribers to keep all downloads available, you’ll need to connect your phone to Wi-Fi at least once every 30 days. So if you’re on an extended hiking trip, just make sure to connect to Wi-Fi at least once per month if you want to keep streaming.
